Ham 'n Cola

It will be here before you know it.........that final holiday of summer.

This is what we'll be having over the Labor Day weekend. Since we're spending the time at home, puttering around the house, catching up on some projects, I think this Slow Cooker recipe is going to work out really well. It's just a little bit out of the ordinary, since we don't have it very often, making our holiday seem a little bit special.....and on top of that, it is so easy that I won't have to pay much attention to it at all. On Sunday of that week we'll be having the ham sliced, with potato salad and rolls, then on Monday the 7th we'll have ham sandwiches , with coleslaw and corn on the cob. On the Saturday before, the guys are making Fresh Peach Ice Cream .........hopefully enough to last the entire weekend.......using the recipe from the post here. So if we add lots of iced tea and lemonade I think we're all set to enjoy a very productive, end-of-summer weekend......my favorite kind.

Ham 'n Cola

1/2 cup brown sugar

1 tsp dry mustard

1 tsp prepared horseradish

1/4 cup Coke

3 to 4 lb precooked ham

Throughly combine brown sugar, mustard and horseradish. Moisten with just enough cola to make a smooth paste; reserve remaining cola. Rub entire ham with mixture. Place ham in crock pot and add remaining cola. Cover and cook on high for 1 hour, then turn to low setting for 6 to 7 hours. * Note: a 5lb pound or larger ham can be used in the larger crock pots.....just use slightly more cola and add an hour or two to the low setting cooking time.

Enjoy!

mmmmm! I love ham and this sounds different, and certainly simple enough. I'll have to give it a try some time soon. We'll be out of town over Labor Day so I won't be having to cook at all. I sound excited, but after a few days I start to miss my kitchen!

Wow that looks like it would be good for any holiday meal. Of course I love Coke so I'd think that! lol

Hi Elaine:
Since my gang likes ham, I think I'm going to try this recipe. I may serve mine with cheesy potatoes and cole slaw. Have a good week.

Love,
Amy

This does sound delicious and best of all very simple to make. I'd heard of using Cola and even coffee to make red eye gravy for ham. But this sounds different. And good.

This looks like an easy way to do ham. I've made a Cola cake before, a long time ago but I don't think I have the recipe anymore. I like the idea of planning for a stay-at-home holiday weekend.

I heard of this a long time ago because someone served ham like this at a potluck dinner my parents and I went to. I loved it, but since we moved not long after that I never knew how they did it. Thanks!

Very interesting. Since I've been trying to cut back on my soda consumption maybe I'll get my "fix" this way. lol

I'm thinking my husband would really like this because he likes things like pineapple sauced ham and the sweeter side of bbq sauces. I'll give it a try. I really like that you can prepare it in the crock pot too since I love to have something ready when I get home from work! :)

I have always heard of this but have not tried. Now you have tempted me to do so. Thanks so much for posting to Crock Pot Wednesday. See you next week!

I used to do this many years ago and had forgotten it! Thanks for the reminder--have a great weekend!

I've seen a recipe that's similar to yours before, but for one reason or another I never got around to making it. You've given me new resolve. I hope you are having a wonderful day.

Completely unusual... but I bet it's good. My MIL loves Coke, and would probably enjoy this. :~D

A friend of mine gave me a recipe similar to this but without the horseradish, which I'm sure would add a wonderful kick! Thanks for the recipe.

This is very interesting. I have made beef and pork using crock pot but never ham. Does the meat fall off the bone the same way with ham?
